Why is my embroidery outline not lining up?
On screen, an outline sits exactly on the edge of its fill. On fabric, the two are sewn minutes apart, and the fabric moves in between. Hatch Embroidery describes the two forces at work: stitches pull the fabric in with the direction of the stitches, and they push out at a right angle to the line of stitching. The result is a fill that comes out narrower in one direction and longer in the other than it looked on screen.
When the outline arrives, it sews where the file says the edge was, not where the fill now is. That leaves a sliver of bare fabric on one side of the shape, and often an outline sitting on the fill instead of around it on the other. Embroiderers call this a registration problem.
Hatch lists the factors that change how much a design pulls: the fabric and how well it is hooped, the stabilizer, the size of the design, and the fill and underlay chosen. Some of those live in the file and some on the machine, so the fix depends on which one is at fault.
How does pull compensation stop gaps?
Pull compensation widens each shape in the file so that, after the fabric pulls in, it ends up the size it was drawn. The Ink/Stitch satin column documentation puts it simply: satin stitches pull the fabric together, resulting in a column narrower than you draw, and pull compensation expands each pair of needle penetrations outward to counter it. Hatch describes the same thing as overstitching the outlines of filled shapes on the sides where the needle penetrates.
- Too little compensation: fills shrink away from their outlines and satin borders look thin.
- Too much: shapes bulge past their outlines and small gaps between letters close up.
- Fabric matters: Hatch sets a recommended compensation for the fabric you pick and lets the digitizer override it per object. Stretchy knits need more than stable twill.
Digitizers also overlap neighboring objects slightly, so a fill runs a little underneath the outline that covers it. A small overlap hides the pull; no overlap leaves nothing to spare. Our page on pull compensation explains how the amount is set.
Can the sewing order cause gaps?
Yes. The longer the gap in time between a fill and its outline, the more stitching in between can pull the fabric out of line. Common sequencing faults:
- All fills first, all outlines last. Every fill pulls the fabric before any outline is placed, so errors add up across the design.
- Sewing from one side to the other. The fabric is pushed progressively toward the far side, so outlines drift further out the further they are from the start.
- Jumping back and forth. Returning to an area after sewing somewhere else lets that area move in the meantime.

Is it the hooping or the stabilizer?
Often. The file can only allow for a normal amount of movement. If the fabric slips in the hoop or stretches because the backing cannot hold it, no amount of compensation keeps outlines in place.
- Hoop firmly and evenly, fabric and stabilizer together, without stretching the fabric.
- Use the smallest hoop that fits the design, so there is less loose fabric to move.
- Match the stabilizer to the fabric. Melco recommends cut-away for stretchy fabrics such as knits, polos and performance wear, and tear-away for sturdy materials such as denim and canvas. Our puckering guide covers stabilizer choice in more detail.

How do I tell if the file is to blame?
