What is a VP3 file?
VP3 is the format used by Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking machines, and it is the successor to the older VIP format. A VP3 opens with the characters %vsm% and then a run of length prefixed text fields, followed by one block per color. Each block carries its own thread description and then that color's stitches.
VP3 records more about thread than any other common format. Where a DST stores nothing and a PES stores a palette index, each VP3 color block holds the thread's brand, its catalog number and its name as the digitizer set them. That means a VP3 can tell you it wants Isacord 3611 rather than just a shade of blue, which is the closest any of these formats gets to a written thread list inside the file.
How to open and view a VP3 file
- Add your file. Drag a .vp3 file onto the drop zone, or click to browse (up to 20MB). It opens in your browser.
- Check the preview. The design renders instantly. Use + and − or Fit to zoom, and drag to pan.
- Read the design details. The panel shows width and height, total stitches, color stops, jump stitches, thread length and run time.
- Play the stitch-out. Press Play to watch the machine sequence, or drag the slider to any stitch. Change speed from 0.5× to 8×.
- Set the thread colors. Tap a thread swatch to recolor it so the preview matches your job.
- Share or export. Toggle Jumps to see travel lines, then save a PNG to send to your customer.
What a VP3 file stores that no other format does
