This guide is software-agnostic: the decisions are the same whether you use a free tool or professional software. Reading it won’t replace practice, but it shows what good digitizing involves, so you can do it yourself or judge the files you buy.
What do you need to digitize a logo?
You need digitizing software, clean artwork, and a machine (or someone with one) for test sew-outs. Graphic design programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and CorelDRAW are useful for preparing artwork, but they don’t create embroidery machine files by themselves.

Step 1: Prepare the artwork for its finished size
Decide the finished size first, because every other decision depends on it. A logo that looks crisp at 10 inches wide on a jacket back can turn to mush at left-chest size. Follow the size in your customer’s garment spec.
- Start from vector if you can (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF with outlined fonts). If you only have a JPG or PNG, trace the shapes you need rather than working from blurry pixels.
- Remove detail that’s smaller than thread can hold: hairline strokes, tiny gaps, drop shadows and gradients.
- Merge similar colors. Each extra color is another thread change.
- Check small text now (see step 5). If it’s too small, enlarge it or leave it out.

Step 2: Plan objects and stitch types
Break the logo into objects, then choose a stitch type for each one based mainly on its width.

Also set the stitch angle for each object. Varying angles between neighboring fills adds definition, while following the shape of a column keeps satin smooth.
Step 3: Set underlay and density for the fabric
Underlay is the foundation layer of stitches sewn before the visible ones. The Ink/Stitch documentation explains that a single layer of fill usually doesn’t look good on its own, and that underlay holds up the final stitches. Density is how close the rows of top stitches sit.
There is no universal number for either, so work from principles and test:

Step 4: Add pull compensation
Stitches pull fabric in along their direction, so shapes sew narrower than drawn. Ink/Stitch describes pull compensation as a setting that expands each row of stitches outward to counter this. Add more on stretchy fabrics and less on stable ones, and check that small counters in letters (the holes in “a,” “e” and “o”) don’t close up.
Step 5: Build the lettering
Small text is where most DIY files fail. Use your software’s built-in embroidery fonts where you can, because they are already set up as satin columns. Hatch Embroidery’s lettering guide lists minimum sizes per font, for example:

If the logo’s tagline is smaller than that at the finished size, enlarge it, switch to a bolder font or leave it out. We also offer small lettering and sleeve digitizing for text that has to stay small.
Step 6: Set the sequence, trims and tie-offs
Order the objects so the design builds up cleanly: background before foreground, fills before the outlines that sit on top of them, and one color finished before the next begins. Minimize jumps by traveling under objects that will be covered later. Add trims where the thread would otherwise cross open fabric, and tie-offs so stitches don’t unravel. On caps, sequence from the center outward and from the bottom up.
Step 7: Export the right file format
Save your editable project file first, then export the stitch file your machine needs: usually DST for commercial machines and the brand format (such as PES for Brother) for home machines. Step 8: Test-sew and adjust
Sew the design on the same fabric, stabilizer and thread you’ll use for the real job. Check that outlines line up with fills, small text is readable, there’s no puckering or fabric showing through, and there are no loose jump threads. Adjust and sew again. Can AI or auto-digitizing do this for me?
Auto-digitizing tools can produce a file quickly, and for simple, bold shapes the result may be usable. They struggle with the decisions above: small text, stitch angles, underlay for your fabric and sensible sequencing.
