Why can't I just save my image as a DST or PES?
Because an image and an embroidery file store completely different things. A JPG or PNG is a grid of colored pixels. An embroidery file is a list of machine instructions: move the needle here, stitch, jump, trim, stop for the next thread. A DST file, the most common commercial format, doesn't even store thread colors, only the points where the color changes (pyembroidery documentation).
Turning the picture into those instructions is called digitizing. Whoever does it, a person or a piece of software, has to decide:
- Stitch type for each shape: running stitch for fine lines, satin for borders and lettering, fill (tatami) for large areas.
- Direction and density: the angle of the stitches and how closely the rows sit.
- Underlay: a foundation layer of stitches that holds the fabric steady before the top stitches go down.
- Pull compensation: extra width, because stitches pull the fabric in. The Ink/Stitch satin column docs note that a satin column sews narrower than you draw it.
- Sewing order, jumps and trims, so the machine doesn't drag long threads across the design.

Is my image good enough to embroider?
Check five things before you digitize anything. Most disappointing results start with the artwork, not the software.
- Resolution at the finished size. A small, blurry screenshot stretched to 4 inches gives any tool, or person, less to work from. Use the largest original you have, ideally a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF).
- Number of colors. Each color is a thread change. Shading and soft edges can look like dozens of colors to software.
- Thin lines. Hairline details that look fine on screen can disappear or break up in thread.
- Small text. Hatch's lettering guide recommends a minimum of about 0.25 in (6 mm) for common fonts such as Tahoma, Times New Roman and Verdana (Hatch Embroidery).
- Gradients, shadows and photo detail. Thread comes in solid colors, so these need simplifying.

Which file format does my machine need?
Use the format your machine brand reads natively. DST is the most widely accepted commercial format; home machines usually prefer their own brand's format.

What are my options for turning an image into stitches?
There are three honest routes. Each is the right answer for somebody.
Inkscape plus the Ink/Stitch extension. Full control and no cost, but you are learning a skill and will need test sew-outs.
Auto-digitizing in software or an online converter. Quick on bold, simple shapes; weaker on small text, gradients and stretchy fabrics.
A digitizer builds the file for your garment and machine. One flat price per design, back in 4–8 hours.
How do I digitize an image for free with Ink/Stitch?
Install Inkscape and Ink/Stitch, turn your image into vector shapes, assign stitch types, then save in your machine's format and sew a test. Ink/Stitch describes itself as an open-source machine embroidery design platform based on Inkscape. Version 3.3.0 was released on July 31, 2026, with install guides for Windows, macOS and Linux. The steps below follow its workflow documentation.
- Install Inkscape and then Ink/Stitch for your operating system.
- Import your image and set the document to the finished embroidery size, so every decision is made at real size.
- Turn it into vector shapes. Ink/Stitch works with vector paths (SVG). Inkscape's Path > Trace Bitmap can auto-trace, and the Ink/Stitch docs say results often improve if you simplify the image first in a raster editor such as GIMP. For clean logos, redrawing the shapes by hand is often quicker than fixing a messy trace.
- Clean up: merge near-identical colors, delete tiny specks, and thicken or remove hairline details.
- Assign stitch types in Ink/Stitch's Params dialog: running stitch for fine lines, satin for borders and text, fill for large areas. Underlay is enabled by default for fills; adjust pull compensation for your fabric.
- Set the sewing order from background to foreground, keeping jumps between areas short.
- Simulate the design and fix gaps, overlaps and stray jumps.
- Save a copy as DST, PES, JEF, EXP, VP3 or XXX (Ink/Stitch can read HUS files but doesn't write them, per its file formats page), then stitch a test on scrap fabric with the same stabilizer. Expect a few rounds of adjustments.
Good for: hobby projects, learning, simple shapes and lettering you can size generously. Harder for: small text, caps, detailed logos and anything you need right the first time. For a longer walkthrough, see how to digitize a logo for embroidery.
What do automatic image-to-embroidery converters actually do?
They find the colored areas in your image, fill them using default stitch settings and export a machine file. The category includes:
- Auto-digitizing inside embroidery software. Hatch lists auto-digitizing of photos and artwork in its Composer and Digitizer levels and offers a 30-day free trial (Hatch pricing). Brother's support site shows the Auto Punch feature in its PE-DESIGNNext software creating an embroidery pattern from an image (Brother support).
- Online converters. For example, SewFlow lets you create and preview a design for free, and asks for a paid plan or credits to download the machine file.
Software makers are candid about the limits. Hatch's own auto-digitizing guide says artwork should be simple and clear, with few colors, no shading and crisp outlines; that blurred lines and blended colors give inferior results; and that you should review the stitches before exporting.
An embroidery machine doesn't print color. It drags thread through fabric, and the fabric pulls back.
A digitizer plans for that with underlay to stabilize the fabric, pull compensation so shapes don't shrink, stitch angles that catch the light, and a sewing order that avoids long jumps. An automatic converter sees colored areas and fills them. On a bold shape at a large size, that can be fine. On small text, a gradient or a stretchy polo, it usually needs work. Which route should I choose?
Choose by what a bad result would cost you. A wobbly tote bag for yourself is fine; a customer's logo on 48 polos is not.
