What auto-digitizing does well, and where it struggles.
Usually fine
- Bold, simple shapes with clean edges
- Large text in plain fonts
- Designs with a few flat colors
- Larger finished sizes on stable fabrics
Usually needs manual work
- Small text. Hatch's own lettering guide gives 0.25 in (6 mm) as the minimum for common fonts (source).
- Gradients, photos and fine outlines
- Stitch direction and underlay for stretchy or napped fabrics
- Cap sequencing and pull compensation
- Trims and jumps on busy designs

Software price vs per-design fees: the arithmetic.
Plain division using the list prices above and the Simple and Complex prices on our price list. It leaves out the biggest software cost, which is the time it takes to learn.

Add your own time. Estimate the hours you'd spend learning, plus the minutes per design once you're comfortable, and multiply by what an hour of your time is worth. Digitizing is a skill: files that run cleanly on caps or small text take practice, and that practice time comes out of production.
When buying software is the right call.
- You digitize most days or most weeks.
- You sell your own designs and want full control.
- You enjoy the craft and want to build the skill.
- You need instant edits at the machine.
- You mostly do monograms, names and simple text, where lettering software may be enough.
When a service is the right call.
- You need a production-ready file today.
- You run customer logos you didn't design.
- The job is a cap, 3D puff, jacket back or small lettering.
- You only need a few new designs a month.
- You'd rather spend machine time producing than learning.
The hybrid many shops use.
Plenty of shops keep lettering or editing software for names, small text changes and format conversion, and send new logos and the difficult jobs to a service.
