What is wrong with my embroidery?

Is it the file or the setup?

Fixing the wrong side wastes garments, so decide which one it is before changing anything. Thread and machine makers list both sides: Madeira names threading, tension and needles as common causes of thread breaks but adds that poor digitizing can be a major contributor, and Brother lists dense, very short and overlapping stitches in the embroidery data alongside needle and tension faults.

The same-place test

Re-thread, fit a new needle, hoop the same fabric firmly with the right stabilizer, and sew the design again. A fault that returns at the same point in the design is in the file. A fault that moves, varies from piece to piece or goes away was the setup.

Some clues point one way straight away:

  • Points to the file: the same fault on every piece and every machine; problems that started after the design was resized; stiff, board-like areas; small text that is unreadable on every run.
  • Points to the setup: random breaks; faults on one needle or one head only; problems that appeared with a new batch of garments, stabilizer or thread.

How do I catch problems before sewing?

Many file faults show on screen. Open the design in our free DST file viewer, confirm the width and height, and play it stitch by stitch: watch for tight clusters of stitches, outlines that sew long after their fills, and long jumps with no trim. How are file problems fixed?

File faults are fixed in the digitizing software, not on the machine. A machine file such as DST stores stitches, not shapes, so density, underlay, compensation and sewing order are changed from the working file, or the design is rebuilt. Our pages on digitizing techniques explain each setting.

Setup faults are fixed at the machine, one change at a time: change the needle, re-thread, check tension, then re-hoop with the right stabilizer, and sew a test after each change so you know which one worked. Changing everything at once hides the cause, and it comes back on the next order.

Frequently asked questions

Thread breaks, puckering, gaps between fills and outlines, small text filling in, and designs sewing at the wrong size. Each has file causes and setup causes, and the table above links to the fix for each.
Sew it again with a fresh needle, correct threading, a firm hoop and the right stabilizer. If the same fault appears in the same place, the file is the problem.
Small things, such as thread colors and sometimes trims, can be changed in editing software. Density, underlay, compensation and sewing order need the working file or a rebuild, because a DST keeps no objects.
Check the setup first, because it is quicker and cheaper: threading, needle, tension, hooping and stabilizer. If the fault still repeats in the same place, look at the file.
