* Dimensions and stitch counts are read directly from the PES file. Run time is estimated at 800 stitches per minute and will vary by machine, fabric and design. Thread length is an approximation of the stitch path.
What is a PES file?
PES is Brother's embroidery format, used by Brother, Baby Lock and Bernina machines. Every PES file starts with the characters #PES and wraps a second section called PEC, which is where the stitches actually live. The outer PES part carries design and version information, and the PEC part carries the needle movements and the color list.
Unlike DST, a PES file does store thread colors. The PEC section holds an index into Brother's own thread palette for each color block, so this viewer can show the design in the colors the digitizer chose instead of placeholders. That is the single biggest practical difference between opening a PES and opening a DST, and it is why a PES preview usually looks like the finished garment.
How to open and view a PES file
- Add your file. Drag a .pes file onto the drop zone, or click to browse (up to 20MB). It opens in your browser.
- Check the preview. The design renders instantly. Use + and − or Fit to zoom, and drag to pan.
- Read the design details. The panel shows width and height, total stitches, color stops, jump stitches, thread length and run time.
- Play the stitch-out. Press Play to watch the machine sequence, or drag the slider to any stitch. Change speed from 0.5× to 8×.
- Set the thread colors. Tap a thread swatch to recolor it so the preview matches your job.
- Share or export. Toggle Jumps to see travel lines, then save a PNG to send to your customer.
What a PES file stores that a DST does not
