Fix an Embroidery File That Won't Sew Right

Send us the DST, PES or other stitch file, plus a photo of the sew-out if you have one, for a free file check. A PlixaLabs digitizer finds what's wrong, then fixes or rebuilds the file by hand. We repair broken, auto-digitized and third-party files, and quote the repair after the check, so you know the price before any work starts.

Common problems

Common file problems and how they're fixed.

Many sewing problems that aren't caused by the machine, needle or hooping come from how the file was built. This is general guidance; the free file check tells you what applies to your file.

What you seeLikely cause in the fileWhat the fix usually involves
Puckering around fillsDensity too high, too little underlay or no pull compensation for the fabricRebalance density, add suitable underlay and compensation
Gaps between fills and outlinesNo pull compensation or overlap between neighboring objectsAdd compensation and overlap so shapes still meet after the fabric pulls
Small text closes up or is unreadableSatin columns too wide or dense for the letter sizeRebuild the lettering for its actual size
Thread breaks or bird-nestingVery short or stacked stitches, often from scaling or auto-conversionClean up stitch lengths and remove stacked stitches
Too many jumps and trimsPoor sequencing of objects and colorsRe-sequence the design to cut travel and trims
Design distorts on capsFlat-garment sequencing on a curved cap frontRebuild for caps, sewing from the center out
Wrong size after resizingThe stitch file was scaled without recalculating density or satin widthsRebuild at the new size
Auto-digitized or AI file looks messyStitch types, directions and underlay chosen by software, not for the fabricRebuild the design by hand

Fix or rebuild

Fix it or rebuild it? How it's decided.

A stitch file such as DST stores individual stitches, not editable shapes. That limits what can be changed cleanly.

A fix suits a file that's mostly well built with a few specific problems, such as a trim in the wrong place or one area that's too dense.

A rebuild suits a file that was auto-digitized, badly scaled or built without underlay and compensation. Patching those often takes longer than digitizing the design again properly.

After the free file check, we tell you which your file needs and what it will cost.

How it works

How the free file check works.

  1. Send the file. Upload it on the quote form and write "file check" in the notes.
  2. We check it. A digitizer looks at how the file is built and what's causing the problem.
  3. You get a quote. We tell you whether it needs a fix or a rebuild, and the price.
  4. We fix or rebuild it by hand. You get the file back in the formats you need, with a stitch simulation preview and unlimited revisions.

What to send

What to send with your file.

The more we know about how the file was sewn, the faster we can find the problem.

The stitch file
DST, PES, JEF, EXP, VP3, HUS or any other machine format. If you have the original artwork, send that too.
Sew-out photos
A clear photo of the front and, if you can, the back of the stitched design. Close-ups of the problem areas help most.
Garment and fabric
What it was sewn on (pique polo, cap, fleece, towel, performance knit) and the stabilizer you used.
Machine and format
Your machine brand and the file format you need back.
Target size
The finished width or height you want, especially if the file was resized.
Your right to use it
Only send designs you have the right to use and modify, such as your own logo or a customer's logo for their order.

FAQ

File repair questions.

Yes, within limits. A DST file stores stitches rather than editable shapes, so small changes are possible but larger fixes are often cleaner as a rebuild. After the free file check we'll tell you which your file needs.
Yes. We fix or rebuild broken, auto-digitized and third-party files. Send the original artwork too if you have it, as it helps with a rebuild.
Scaling a stitch file stretches or squeezes the stitches without recalculating density, underlay or satin widths. A small change may sew fine; bigger changes usually need the design rebuilt at the new size.
It depends on what's wrong, so file repairs are quoted after a free file check. You see the quote before any work starts. For reference, new designs are priced from $10 per design.
Send a photo of the new sew-out and tell us what's wrong. Revisions are unlimited, with no time limit.
Yes. If you often receive broken customer files, a trade account gives you white-label delivery, Net-30 for approved accounts and volume pricing quoted per account.
