Files for sequin devices

Sequin Embroidery Digitizing

A sequin design needs more than stitches: the file has to tell the machine where each sequin drops, which size to use and when to switch between the sequin device and normal embroidery. We plan every sequin path by hand for your machine and device, so sequins sit flat, evenly spaced and in the right direction. One flat price per design, with unlimited revisions.

What makes sequins different

Why sequin files need their own planning

In a normal file, every point is a stitch. In a sequin file, some points are instructions to the sequin device: drop a sequin here, tack it down, move on. The spacing between drops has to match the sequin size, or they overlap and stand up, or leave gaps that show the fabric.

Direction matters too. Sequins lie best when they follow one clean path through a shape, the way scales lie on a fish. A path that doubles back or changes direction sharply leaves sequins tilted and catching the light unevenly.

And the machine has to switch cleanly between the sequin device and normal embroidery. We place those switches so the device is only engaged where sequins belong, and the rest of the design sews as ordinary stitches.

Before you order, check your machine. Sequins need a sequin device fitted to the machine: without one, the sequin commands in the file are ignored or stop the machine.

What we plan on every design
01
Spacing for your sequin size
Drop points spaced for the sequin you load, so they sit flat without overlapping or leaving gaps.
02
One clean direction
Sequin paths laid through each shape in a steady direction, so the finish catches the light evenly.
03
Tidy device switching
The sequin device engaged only where sequins belong, with the rest of the design sewn as normal embroidery.
Is sequin right for your design?

When sequins work, and when they do not

Sequins suit bold shapes. Fine detail is better left to thread.

Design elementSequins?Why
Large letters, numbers and bold shapesYesEnough room for sequins to follow a clean path
Fills with a shine effect, such as fashion motifsYesThe classic use for sequins
Small text and thin outlinesUsually noToo narrow for a sequin to sit flat, so we stitch them instead
Photo-like detail and gradientsNoSequins cannot blend tones; photo embroidery handles that

Many designs mix both: sequins for the main shapes and normal embroidery for outlines and lettering. We combine them in one file.

Auto-generated vs planned by hand

Automatic sequin fills vs sequins planned by hand

Auto-generated sequins
Spacing that ignores sequin size. Sequins overlap and stand up.
Paths that double back. Sequins tilt in different directions.
Sequins forced into thin areas. Edges curl or fall off.
Device switching all over the design. Slow and prone to jams.
Planned by hand
Spacing set for your sequin. Flat, even coverage.
One steady direction per shape. An even shine.
Thin areas stitched instead. Clean edges that last.
Switching grouped logically. Faster, smoother runs.

FAQs

Sequin digitizing questions

No. The machine needs a sequin device fitted. Without one, the sequin commands in the file are ignored or stop the machine, so check your machine before ordering.
Tell us the make, model and whether your sequin device is single or twin, and we build the file for it and confirm the format in your quote.
Yes, and most do. We combine sequin areas and stitched areas in one file and plan the order they sew in.
Use the size your device is set up for, and tell us what it is. The spacing between drops is set from the sequin size, so the file only works as planned with that size loaded.
Usually the drop spacing does not match the sequin size, or the path doubles back on itself. Send us the file and a photo of the sew-out and we will rebuild it.
One flat price per design, including any normal embroidery in it and unlimited revisions. See the price table on this page. Rush and super rush add 50%.
