What kind of embroidery file conversion do I need?
People say "convert" for three quite different jobs. Start from the file you have:

What changes when you convert one machine format to another?
Machine files hold stitches. Wilcom describes them as containing only stitch coordinates and machine functions. Converting between them rewrites those same stitches in a different layout, so the design sews the same way it did before, for better or worse. What can change is the extra information each format carries:
- Thread colors. DST stores color changes but not the colors themselves, according to the EduTech wiki format notes, so a PES made from a DST shows default colors until you set them.
- Trims. DST has no dedicated trim command and signals trims with a run of small jumps, which different machines read differently. Check trims after converting.
- Nothing gets better. A file that puckers or breaks thread as a DST will do the same as a PES. Conversion cannot add underlay, fix density or adapt a design to a new fabric.

Why can an image not be converted to an embroidery file?
A JPG or PNG is colored pixels. A machine needs to know, for every shape, which stitch type to use, at what angle and density, with what underlay and compensation, and in what order. None of that is in the picture, so it has to be decided: that is digitizing. Auto-digitizing software makes those decisions with default settings; Hatch Embroidery describes its tool as classifying image colors as fills or details. It can work on bold, simple artwork, and struggles with small text, gradients and fabric-specific needs.
Whoever digitizes it needs more than the picture: the finished size in inches or millimeters, the garment and fabric, and the machine the file is for. Those three decide the stitch settings, and none of them is in the image either.

Why keep the working file?
A working file such as Wilcom's EMB stores outlines, stitches, thread colors, and other data together, in Wilcom's words, so it can be resized and edited cleanly. Once exported to DST, Melco notes, it cannot be reverted back to the EMB format or edited. Keep the working file, and make every change there before exporting a fresh machine file.
