What is the difference between EMB and DST?

They sit at opposite ends of the job. EMB is the native design file of Wilcom EmbroideryStudio; Wilcom's help describes it as a file in which outlines, stitches, thread colors, and other data are stored together. DST is the Tajima machine format most commercial embroidery machines read, and Wilcom describes machine files as containing only stitch coordinates and machine functions.

How do I convert EMB to DST in Wilcom?

Wilcom calls this exporting a machine file. Its EmbroideryStudio help describes converting an open design as as simple as choosing File > Export Machine File; the same command is on the Standard toolbar.

  1. Open the EMB in EmbroideryStudio and check the design at its finished size.
  2. Save the EMB first, so the working file matches what you export.
  3. Choose File > Export Machine File.
  4. Pick DST as the machine format. Wilcom lists DST alongside Tajima's TBF and T01 formats for Tajima machines, so choose plain DST unless your machine needs one of those.
  5. Save it under a name that matches the EMB, so the pair stays together.
  6. Write down the color sequence, because the DST will not carry it.

What is lost when an EMB becomes a DST?

  • Objects and outlines. When Wilcom reads a machine file back in, it says the file has no object information such as outlines or stitch types, and the design arrives as blocks of stitches it calls manual objects. Wilcom can try to recognize outlines again, but anything it does not recognize stays a block of stitches.
  • Thread colors. DST stores where colors change, not what they are. The EduTech wiki format notes put it plainly: DST files do not contain colors. The operator sets them from a color sheet.
  • Clean resizing. Scaling a DST moves existing stitches rather than recalculating them. See why a design sews the wrong size.
  • Easy edits. Changing density, underlay, compensation or sewing order properly needs the objects that only the EMB still has.

Melco, whose own machines read DST, sums it up: once a file is converted to DST, it cannot be reverted back to the EMB format or edited.

What should I check in the exported DST?

An export copies the stitches faithfully, so problems usually come from the EMB or from a choice made while exporting. Open the DST in a viewer and compare it with the EMB on screen:

  • Width and height match the finished size on the order.
  • Color stops match the number of colors in the EMB, in the same order, so the color sheet lines up with the needles.
  • Trims appear where the EMB has them, with no long jump threads left across open fabric. Machines read DST trims differently, so check this on your own machine.
  • Stitch count matches the EMB. A big difference means a different version of the design was exported.

Why should I keep the EMB file?

Because every future change starts there. A new size for a cap or a jacket back, a version for towels, a fix for gaps or thread breaks, a changed color: each one is a quick edit and a fresh export from the EMB, and a slow, lossy job from the DST.

  • Ask for the EMB when you order digitizing, if you or your digitizer work in Wilcom.
  • Name files as pairs (logo-left-chest.emb and logo-left-chest.dst) and store them together.
  • Never edit and resave the DST as your master. Go back to the EMB and export again.

Not reliably. EMB is Wilcom's own format, and free tools such as Ink/Stitch do not list it among the formats they can open. Ask whoever made the EMB, or a digitizer with Wilcom, to export the DST.
