Can you convert a PNG or JPG to DST?

Not in the sense of converting a file. A JPG or PNG is a grid of colored pixels. A DST, the Tajima format read by most commercial embroidery machines, is a list of movements: the EduTech wiki format notes describe each stitch as a relative move measured in tenths of a millimeter, plus jumps, color changes and an end command. Wilcom describes machine files in general as containing only stitch coordinates and machine functions.

Nothing in a picture tells a machine where to put the needle. Those decisions have to be made and written as stitches, and that step is called digitizing. A tool that promises "PNG to DST" is either digitizing automatically behind the scenes, or it is not producing a usable file.

Two DST details catch people out. First, the EduTech wiki notes that DST files do not contain colors, so the colors from your image are lost: the machine operator sets each needle's thread from a color sequence sheet. Second, DST has no dedicated trim command; trims are signaled by a run of small jumps, so a DST built from an image needs trims planned in, or the operator ends up clipping threads by hand. What does auto-digitizing do with an image?

Auto-digitizing software finds areas of color in the image and turns them into stitch objects using default settings. Hatch Embroidery describes its auto-digitize tool as classifying image colors as fills or details, and says results can be refined with its editing tools afterwards.

It works best on the kind of artwork that is easiest to digitize anyway. Hatch advises using 300 DPI images rather than 96 DPI screen images, and PNG rather than JPG. It struggles with:

  • Small text, which needs settings built for its size; see small embroidery text filling in.
  • Gradients, shadows and photos, which have no solid color areas to fill.
  • Fabric-specific settings, such as the extra underlay a towel needs or the compensation a stretchy polo needs.
  • Sewing order, which decides whether outlines land on their fills.

How do I get a DST file from my image?

  1. Digitize it yourself. Free Ink/Stitch, an extension for Inkscape, can write DST files according to its file formats page, as can commercial software such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio. You trace or redraw the shapes, set the stitches and save as DST. It takes practice and test sew-outs.
  2. Auto-digitize it. Quick for bold, simple logos at a generous size. Open the result in a viewer and sew a test before production.

What should I send to get a DST made from my image?

A digitizer can only build the file for the job you describe. Send these with the image:

  • The best artwork you have. A vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) beats a PNG, and a PNG beats a screenshot or a photo of a printed logo.
  • The finished width or height in inches or millimeters, and where it goes: left chest, cap front, jacket back.
  • The garment and fabric, because a pique polo, a fleece and a structured cap each need different underlay, density and compensation.
  • Your machine, so you get DST for a commercial multi-needle machine and the right format for anything else.

No. Renaming changes the label, not the contents. The machine will reject the file or read nonsense, because there are no stitch commands in it.
They auto-digitize with default settings. Bold, simple shapes at a large size can come out usable; small text, gradients and stretchy fabrics usually need work. Always check the file in a viewer and sew a test.

DST files do not store thread colors, only where the color changes happen. Set each color on the machine from the color sequence your digitizer supplies.
