How much thread does embroidery use?
Thread use follows the stitch count. Madeira estimates that 1,000 standard-length stitches use about 5 m of top thread and 3 to 3.5 m of bobbin thread. Top thread uses more because each stitch pulls a loop of it down through the fabric to lock with the bobbin thread. Madeira's own cone figures agree: about 200,000 stitches from a 1,000 m cone of 40 weight thread with 4 mm stitches, which is 5 m per 1,000.
The calculator uses this formula:
- Top thread per design = stitches ÷ 1,000 × top thread per 1,000 stitches
- Bobbin thread per design = stitches ÷ 1,000 × bobbin thread per 1,000 stitches
- Thread for the order = per design × quantity × (1 + waste allowance)
- Cones per color = that color's share of the top thread ÷ cone length, rounded up
- Bobbins = bobbin thread for the order ÷ thread on one bobbin, rounded up
Worked example (calculator output with its default settings): a 10,000-stitch design in 4 colors, 48 pieces, a 10% waste allowance, 5,000 m cones and Madeira prewound white bobbins at 123 m. Each design uses 50 m of top thread and 30 m of bobbin thread. The order needs 2,640 m of top thread (2,887 yd), about 660 m per color, so 1 cone per color (4 in total) on 5,000 m cones, or 1 per color on 1,000 m cones. Bobbin thread comes to 1,584 m, which is 13 bobbins.
How to use the calculator (step by step)
- Enter the stitch count. Type the stitches per design from your file, or switch to size mode and enter the finished width, height and complexity for an estimate.
- Enter the quantity and colors. Add how many pieces you are stitching and how many thread colors the design uses. Optionally list the stitches per color for a precise split.
- Pick your cone size. Choose a 1,000 m or 5,000 m cone, the two sizes Madeira sells, or enter your own length.
- Pick your bobbin. Choose a Madeira prewound bobbin or type the length of the bobbin you use.
- Set the waste allowance. Add a percentage for thread breaks, tie-ins, trims and test sew-outs. The default is 10%, which is an assumption to adjust.
- Calculate and share. Read the top thread, bobbin thread, cones per color and bobbins for the order, then copy the link to share the result.

Bobbin thread is usually one color, often white or black, for the whole design, so the calculator totals it across all colors. Top thread is split by color because each color sews from its own cone.
Limits and caveats
- Stitch length changes the answer. Madeira's figures are for standard-length stitches. Wide satin columns use more thread per stitch; short running and fill stitches can use less. If you know your designs run long, raise the per-1,000 figures.
- Even split by default. Without a per-color list, the calculator assumes each color sews the same number of stitches. Real designs rarely do, so list the stitches per color when you want an accurate cone count.
- The waste allowance is yours to set. There is no published figure for thread lost to breaks, tie-ins, trims and test runs, so the 10% default is an assumption.
- Size estimates are rough. In size mode, the stitch count comes from a planning model, not a real file. Use the stitch count from the digitized file whenever you have it.
- Other brands differ. The bobbin list covers Madeira prewound bobbins only. For other brands or bobbins you wind yourself, choose Custom and enter the length on the label.
Thread use also rises with density: tighter stitch spacing means more rows and more stitches in every fill. Our guide to embroidery density explains the spacing Madeira recommends for each thread weight.
