Why can't I just save my image as a DST or PES?
An image and an embroidery file hold completely different information. A JPG or PNG is a grid of coloured pixels. An embroidery file is a set of machine instructions: move the needle, stitch, jump, trim, stop for the next thread. The DST format used by most commercial machines doesn't even record thread colours, only where the colour changes happen (pyembroidery documentation).
Turning the picture into instructions is digitising (often searched as embroidery digitizing). Whoever does it, person or software, has to decide:
- Stitch type: running stitch for fine lines, satin for borders and lettering, fill (tatami) for large areas.
- Angle and density: which way the stitches lie and how tightly the rows are packed.
- Underlay: a foundation of stitches that steadies the fabric before the top stitching.
- Pull compensation: extra width, because stitching draws the fabric in. The Ink/Stitch satin column docs point out that a satin column sews narrower than it is drawn.
- Sewing order, jumps and trims, so long threads aren't dragged across the design.
None of that exists in the picture, so "JPG to DST" is never a straight file conversion. If you already have a stitch file and only need another format, that is a conversion: see DST to PES conversion.
Is my image good enough to embroider?
Check five things before you start. Most poor results begin with the artwork rather than the software.
- Resolution at finished size. A small screenshot stretched to 100 mm wide gives any tool, or person, very little to work from. Use the largest original you have, ideally a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF).
- Number of colours. Every colour is a thread change, and shading or soft edges can look like dozens of colours to software.
- Thin lines. Hairline detail that looks sharp on screen can vanish or break up in thread.
- Small text. Hatch's lettering guide recommends at least 6 mm (about 0.25 in) for common fonts such as Tahoma, Times New Roman and Verdana (Hatch Embroidery). That matters on school crests and left-chest logos with a motto underneath.
- Gradients, shadows and photo detail. Thread is a solid colour, so these need simplifying.
Add your image and finished size to spot likely problems before you spend an evening digitising it.
Which file format does my machine need?
Use the format your machine brand reads natively. In UK home embroidery, Brother (PES) and Husqvarna Viking or Pfaff (VP3) are common; embroidery businesses running multi-needle machines mostly use DST.

What are my options for turning an image into stitches?
There are three honest routes, and each suits someone.
Inkscape with the Ink/Stitch extension. Full control at no cost, but it's a skill to learn, with test stitch-outs along the way.
Auto-digitising in software or online. Quick on bold, simple shapes; weaker on small text, shading and stretchy fabrics.
A digitiser builds the file for your garment and machine. One flat price per design, back in 4–8 hours.
How do I digitise an image for free with Ink/Stitch?
Install Inkscape and Ink/Stitch, turn the image into vector shapes, set stitch types, then save in your machine's format and stitch a test. Ink/Stitch describes itself as an open-source machine embroidery design platform based on Inkscape. Version 3.3.0 was released on 31 July 2026, and there are install guides for Windows, macOS and Linux. These steps follow its workflow documentation.
- Install Inkscape, then Ink/Stitch for your operating system.
- Import the image and set the page to the finished embroidery size in millimetres.
- Convert it to vector shapes. Ink/Stitch works with vector paths (SVG). Inkscape's Path > Trace Bitmap can auto-trace, and the Ink/Stitch docs note that results often improve if you simplify the image in a raster editor such as GIMP first. With a clean logo, redrawing the shapes can be quicker than repairing a messy trace.
- Tidy up: merge near-identical colours, delete stray specks, and thicken or remove hairline detail.
- Set stitch types in the Params dialog: running stitch for fine lines, satin for borders and text, fill for large areas. Underlay is enabled by default on fills; adjust pull compensation for fleece, softshell or stretchy polos.
- Order the objects from background to foreground to keep jumps short.
- Simulate and fix gaps, overlaps and stray jumps.
- Save a copy as DST, PES, JEF, EXP, VP3 or XXX. Ink/Stitch reads HUS but doesn't write it (file formats page), so Viking owners should use VP3. Test on scrap fabric with the same stabiliser, and expect a few rounds of changes.
Good for: hobby projects, learning, simple shapes and generously sized lettering. Harder for: small text, caps, detailed crests and anything that must be right first time. For a longer walkthrough, see how to digitise a logo for embroidery (US guide).
What do automatic image-to-embroidery converters actually do?
They detect the coloured areas in your image, fill them with default stitch settings and export a machine file. The category includes:
- Auto-digitising inside embroidery software. Hatch lists auto-digitising of photos and artwork in its Composer and Digitizer levels, with a 30-day free trial (Hatch pricing). Brother's support site shows the Auto Punch feature in PE-DESIGNNext creating an embroidery pattern from an image (Brother support).
- Online converters. SewFlow, for example, lets you create and preview a design free and asks for a paid plan or credits to download the machine file.
The software makers are open about the limits. Hatch's auto-digitising guide says artwork should be simple and clear, with few colours, no shading and crisp outlines; that blurred lines and blended colours give poorer results; and that you should review the stitches before exporting.
An embroidery machine doesn't print colour. It pulls thread through fabric, and the fabric pulls back.
A digitiser allows for that with underlay to stabilise the fabric, pull compensation so shapes don't shrink, stitch angles that catch the light, and a sewing order without long jumps. An automatic converter just fills coloured areas. On a large, bold shape that can be fine; on small text, shading or a stretchy polo it usually needs work. Which route should I choose?
Decide by what a poor result would cost you. A slightly wonky cushion cover for yourself is fine; a club badge on 30 fleeces is not.
