Why can't a JPG be converted straight into a PES file?
PES stores stitches, not pixels. It's the native embroidery format for Brother machines (and Baby Lock), recording where every stitch goes, the jumps and trims between areas, and a thread colour for each colour change. A JPG only records coloured pixels, so there's nothing in it for the machine to stitch.
The picture has to be digitised: satin, fill or running stitch chosen for each shape, stitch angle and density set, underlay added to hold the fabric, and shapes widened slightly because stitching draws fabric in. A "JPG to PES converter" is really an automatic digitiser, which is why results vary so much. What size should my design be before I digitise it?
Settle the finished size first, and keep it inside your machine's embroidery area.
- Embroidery area isn't hoop size. The stitchable area is smaller than the outside of the hoop frame. Your manual gives the maximum embroidery area for your model in millimetres; work to that.
- Digitise at real size. Density, satin widths and small lettering are set for one size. Scaling a finished PES up or down by a lot changes how densely it stitches and can cause puckering, gaps or letters that fill in.
- Mind the small print. Hatch's lettering guide recommends about 6 mm (0.25 in) as a minimum height for common fonts (Hatch Embroidery). A club name that fits a 100 × 100 mm hoop may still be too small to stitch cleanly.
What are the ways to get a PES file from a JPG?
Four realistic routes, from free and hands-on to done for you.
Open-source extension for Inkscape. Saves PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3 and XXX (file formats). Full control, but a real learning curve.
Brother's own software, where Auto Punch creates an embroidery pattern from an image (Brother support). The PE-DESIGN 11 trial can't save, export or transfer designs (Brother).
Quick automatic output. Some preview free and charge for the machine file, such as SewFlow. Always check the result and stitch a test.

How do I turn a JPG into a PES file with Ink/Stitch?
Trace or redraw the image as vector shapes, set the stitches, then save a copy as PES. A short version of the Ink/Stitch workflow:
- Install Inkscape and Ink/Stitch (Windows, macOS or Linux).
- Import the JPG and set the page to your finished size in millimetres, inside the embroidery area.
- Make vector shapes with Path > Trace Bitmap, or redraw them; simplifying the image first gives a cleaner trace.
- Set stitch types in the Params dialog: satin for text and borders, fill for larger areas, running stitch for fine lines.
- Simulate, close gaps, shorten jumps and set thread colours.
- Choose File > Save a copy, pick PES, and stitch a test on similar fabric with the same stabiliser.

How do I get the PES file onto my Brother machine?
Normally by USB stick, or by wireless or app transfer on models that support it. Your manual says which your machine offers. If the design won't appear, the usual culprits are:
- a design bigger than the machine's embroidery area;
- a file saved somewhere the machine doesn't look;
- a file type or design your model doesn't accept.

Does it matter if my image is a PNG, JPEG or screenshot?
Picture quality matters more than file type. A PNG with a transparent background saves a step, as software won't try to stitch the background. JPEGs often have fuzzy, blocky edges around lettering. Screenshots and images saved from social media or a school website are usually far too small to digitise cleanly at 100 mm wide. If there's a vector original (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF), ask for it.
