Hand tracing vs auto-trace

Why a one-click trace lets you down

Illustrator, Inkscape and online converters all offer an automatic trace. It follows the pixels, so the result carries hundreds of points, uneven edges and a spread of almost-identical colours.

On screen that can pass. At the printer the colours won't separate, on a vinyl plotter the blade judders along every bump, and enlarged for a sign the edges look lumpy. Redrawing by hand gives deliberate curves with as few points as possible, closed shapes and one object per colour.

The quality of your image matters less than you'd think. We redraw the artwork instead of tracing pixels, so a small, blurry or faded file is usually fine: send what you've got.

Doing it yourself?

When a free trace will do

Image Trace in Illustrator or Trace Bitmap in Inkscape handles simple, bold, high-contrast marks well, such as a one-colour symbol on white. If your logo is like that, give them a go.

Hand vectorising is worth it when there is small text, fine lines, soft or faded edges, several colours to separate, or a cutter involved. The free EPS and AI viewer shows whether a file you already have contains real paths, and JPG or PNG to vector covers image-file specifics.

Vectorising questions

Yes. Take the photo straight-on in even light. We redraw from what's visible and check any wording we can't make out with you.
For a simple, high-contrast logo it can be. It struggles with small text, soft edges and colour separation, which is where a hand redraw is worth it.
Yes. Every order includes a true vector EPS alongside AI, SVG and PDF. Saving a JPG as EPS on your own computer only wraps the pixels, which printers will reject.
Lettering is supplied as clean outlines so it displays correctly anywhere. Custom lettering is redrawn to match; if we identify a standard font we'll tell you its name so you can set new text.
Yes. Each spot colour is its own object, matched to the Pantone references you send, so your printer can split them directly.
Yes. Let us know it's for cutting and we close every path, remove overlaps and clear stray points.
