Hand tracing vs auto-trace

Why Image Trace isn't conversion

Every design app has a one-click trace button. It samples pixels and wraps a path around anything that looks like an edge, which is why the result has hundreds of nodes, wobbly outlines and dozens of near-identical color shades.

That looks passable on screen and falls apart where it matters: enlarged, the edges are lumpy; at the screen printer, the colors won't separate; on a vinyl cutter, the blade chatters along every wobble. A hand redraw rebuilds the shapes as intentional geometry: the fewest curves that hold the form, properly closed, correctly stacked, and colored as separate objects.

If what you actually need is a stitch file for an embroidery machine, that is a different job: see turning a logo into an embroidery file.

Source quality matters far less than people expect. We rebuild the artwork rather than tracing the pixels, so a small, compressed or faded image is usually no obstacle: send whatever you have.

What we build in
01
Intentional geometry
Curves rebuilt with the minimum nodes needed to hold the shape, so files stay light and editable.
02
Production-safe paths
No stray points, open shapes or overlapping duplicates, so files cut, print and RIP predictably.
03
Separable spot colors
Each color is its own object, not a hundred sampled shades, so separations can be pulled without a phone call.

When a free trace is good enough

Illustrator's Image Trace and Inkscape's Trace Bitmap are fine for simple, bold, high-contrast marks such as a single-color icon on a white background. If that describes your logo, try them first.

A hand redraw earns its keep when the artwork has small text, thin lines, soft or faded edges, several colors that must separate for print, or when the file is going to a cutter. You can check whether a file you already have contains real paths in the free EPS and AI file viewer. For JPG and PNG specifics, see JPG or PNG to vector.

Auto-trace vs hand redraw

What a one-click trace gives you vs a hand redraw

Auto-trace result
Wobbly, stair-stepped edges. Paths follow pixel noise instead of the intended shape.
Hundreds of redundant nodes. Heavy, slow and effectively uneditable.
Dozens of near-identical colors. Impossible to separate for screen printing.
Open paths and stray points. Cutters and RIPs behave unpredictably.
Type mangled into blobs. Lettering that can never be cleaned up.
Hand-traced file
Clean, intentional curves. Crisp at any size, from a business card to a banner.
Minimum node count. Light, fast and genuinely editable.
Discrete spot colors. Separation-ready objects.
Closed, production-safe paths. Predictable on every device.
Lettering redrawn properly. Clean outlines matched to the original.
What to send

What we need for a vector redraw

  • The image: PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, PDF, a screenshot or a photo
  • How it will be used: screen print, vinyl, DTF, engraving, signage
  • Pantone references or brand colors, if you have them
  • Wording for any text that is hard to read in the image
  • Changes you want while we redraw, such as removing a background

FAQs

Vector conversion questions

Yes. Photograph it as square-on and evenly lit as you can. We redraw from what is visible and ask you about any wording we can't read.
For a simple, high-contrast logo it can be. It struggles with small text, soft edges and color separation, which is where a hand redraw pays off.
Yes. Because we rebuild the artwork rather than tracing pixels, a scan of a business card, letterhead or faded print is usually enough to work from.
Lettering is supplied as clean outlines so it looks right on any computer. Custom lettering is redrawn to match the original; if we identify a standard typeface we tell you its name so you can set new text yourself.
Yes. Each spot color is built as its own object, matched to the Pantone references you send, so your printer can pull separations directly.
Yes. Tell us it's for a cutter and we make sure every path is closed, overlaps are removed and there are no stray points for the blade to catch.
Vector conversion is one flat price per design, including AI, EPS, SVG and PDF files and unlimited revisions; see the price table on this page or the full price list. Rush (2–4 hours) and super rush (1–2 hours) add 50%.
