Why can’t an embroidery machine sew a JPG?

Because an image only describes colours in a grid of pixels, and a machine needs movement instructions. A JPG, PNG or PDF says “this area is navy.” It doesn’t say where the needle goes in, which direction the thread should lie, how close each stitch sits to the next, or which part sews first.

A stitch file holds exactly that: a long list of needle positions plus commands for jumps, trims, colour-change stops and the end of the design. Some formats also store thread colours. DST, the Tajima format that almost every commercial machine reads, doesn’t, as Brother’s support site points out. Our embroidery file formats guide covers each format.

Turning the picture into those instructions is the digitising (you’ll also see it spelled “embroidery digitizing”, especially in the US). Software helps, but the decisions are what make a file sew well.

What does a digitiser decide?

A digitiser makes six kinds of decision for every design. Each depends on the finished size, the fabric and the machine.

Stitch types: running, satin and fill

Choosing the wrong type is one of the most visible faults. Satin stitches that are too long can snag and look loose, while a fill squeezed into a very narrow shape can look ragged.

Density

Density is how closely rows of stitches sit together. Too loose and the fabric shows through. Too tight and the design turns stiff, puckers the fabric or breaks thread. The right density depends on the thread, the stitch type and the fabric, so there’s no single correct number.

Underlay

Underlay is a light layer of stitches sewn first, underneath the visible stitches. The Ink/Stitch documentation describes it as an initial layer that holds up the final stitches. It stabilises the fabric, stops top stitches sinking into fleece or towelling, and keeps edges crisp.

Pull (push-pull) compensation

Stitches pull fabric inward along their direction and push it outward at the ends. Left alone, a circle can sew as an oval and letters come out thinner than drawn. Compensation widens shapes slightly in the direction of pull so the sewn result matches the artwork.

Sequencing, jumps and trims

The sewing order controls how the fabric moves while the design sews. A good sequence works from the centre outward or from background to foreground, finishes each colour before moving on, and avoids long jumps. Trims cut the thread between separate areas so there are no loose strands to snip by hand.

Tie-ins and tie-offs

Tiny locking stitches at the start and end of each section stop the thread from unravelling. They matter most on garments that are washed often, like school uniform and workwear.

How does a design become a stitch file?

Professional digitising follows the same six steps, whatever software is used.

  1. Brief. Finished size, garment and fabric, placement, thread colours and the machine or file format.
  2. Artwork review. The digitiser checks what will sew cleanly at that size and flags very small text or fine lines.
  3. Digitising. Each shape is rebuilt as stitch objects with the right stitch type, angle, density, underlay and compensation.
  4. Sequencing. Objects are ordered to limit jumps, trims and colour changes.
  5. Stitch simulation. A preview shows how the stitches lie before any thread is used.
  6. Export and test. The file is saved in the formats the machine needs, then test-sewn and adjusted if something needs a change.

What is the difference between manual and auto-digitising?

Auto-digitising is software that traces an image and generates stitches automatically. Manual digitising means a person builds each stitch object and sets its properties. Many digitising programs include both: Hatch Embroidery, for example, lists manual and automatic digitising among its tools.

Auto-digitising is quick and can be acceptable for simple, bold shapes. It applies general settings, though, so it can’t know that your logo is going on a stretchy sports top or a structured cap. What artwork do you need for digitising?

The clearest version of your logo you have. A vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) is best, a sharp PNG or JPG is fine, and a straight-on photo of existing embroidery can often work.
