How does Coloreel color the thread?
A conventional machine holds one cone of thread per needle, so a 12-color logo needs 12 needles or a thread change. Coloreel replaces that with one undyed thread and a dyeing unit, which Coloreel calls the ITCU (Instant Thread Coloring Unit), fitted between the thread supply and the embroidery head.
- The thread: Madeira makes the base thread for Coloreel: an undyed white, 100% recycled polyester thread for 40 weight designs, sewn with 70/10 to 75/11 needles, according to Madeira's Coloreel thread page.
- The dyeing: the unit colors the thread with CMYK inks as it feeds, in the right color at the right point in the design. ZSK, a Coloreel distributor, gives a maximum dyeing speed of 200 mm of thread per second.
- After sewing: Coloreel's FAQ states that no post-treatment is needed, and that finished pieces can be washed, dry cleaned or tumble dried straight away.
The result is that color becomes a property of each stretch of thread, not of each needle. That is what makes blends possible inside a single fill.
What can Coloreel embroider that a standard machine cannot?
A standard machine can only fake a gradient by overlapping blocks of different threads. Coloreel dyes the transition into the thread itself. ZSK lists these effect types for the system:

Which embroidery machines does Coloreel work with?
Coloreel's FAQ states that the unit works with any industrial embroidery machine brand, on a single-head or a multi-head machine up to eight heads. Its product page describes it as fitting any modern single-head or multi-head machine through open file formats and modern APIs.
Coloreel sells through distributors, and machine makers such as ZSK are among them. ZSK states the system works with its own single-head and multi-head machines and with machines from other manufacturers. Whether a particular older machine can take a unit is a question for the distributor, so we do not list models here. What changes in the embroidery file?
A Coloreel job has two parts: the stitch file that drives the machine, and a color file that tells the unit what color to dye each stretch of thread.
- Stitch file. The design is digitized in any digitizing program and exported as a DST. Coloreel advises creating the file in one sequence and hiding color changes in the underlay, since there are no needle changes to plan around.
- Coloring. The DST is imported into Coloreel Studio, Coloreel's free software, where colors, gradients and effects are assigned. Coloreel Studio saves the CSE color file.
- Integrated software. Coloreel states it is fully integrated with Pulse ID and Tajima DG, and Wilcom EmbroideryStudio Digital Edition can export the CSE format directly.
Because a color change is placed along a length of thread, and machines use slightly different amounts of thread for the same design, Coloreel Studio shows CCP (Color Change Precision) as a minimum and maximum: the earliest and latest a change may land. Coloreel notes that machine type, maintenance and bobbin tension all affect it. Files built for Coloreel keep transitions where that tolerance does not show.
A standard multi-needle file can be colored in Coloreel Studio, but its paths were laid out for solid blocks, so blends break where the paths do. Our Coloreel digitizing service builds the stitch file and the CSE color file together for that reason.
What are the limits of Coloreel embroidery?
- Color gamut: the inks are CMYK, so some saturated brand colors fall outside what the thread can reach. Coloreel describes the range as roughly that of office printer output, slightly wider than standard CMYK.
- Thread type: the dyed thread is the Coloreel polyester base thread. Metallic or other specialty threads have to run on other needles using the multi-thread option.
- Short runs: a color change needs thread length to land, so tiny text and fine outlines read better in one flat color. Our Coloreel files keep text under about 0.2 in flat.
