What artwork works best for Coloreel gradients?
On a Coloreel unit the color is dyed into the thread as it feeds, not printed on the fabric. So a gradient is not a grid of pixels: it is a color that changes along each row of stitches. That shapes what makes good artwork. (How the unit works is covered in what is Coloreel embroidery.)

Vector artwork (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) is best for logos, because the gradient stops and angles can be read exactly. For general file and size rules, see our artwork requirements for embroidery digitizing.
How should gradients be set up in Coloreel artwork?
- One direction per shape. A blend is dyed along the stitch path, so the digitizer sets the fill direction and sequence to suit the way the color travels. A gradient with one clear direction is easier to follow than one that swirls through a shape. Say which way the color should travel if the artwork does not make it obvious.
- Clear color stops. Give the start and end colors, and any colors in between, as references rather than leaving them to be sampled from a screen image.
- Watch the middle of the blend. Coloreel documents three gradient methods in Coloreel Studio. A Cartesian blend can pass through gray between two colors; a spherical blend stays in safer parts of the color space; ease in/out holds the start and end colors longer and changes quickly in the middle. Blends between opposite colors, such as orange to blue, are where the method matters most.
- Allow room for the change. Machines use slightly different amounts of thread for the same design, so Coloreel Studio shows a minimum and maximum for where each color change lands (CCP, Color Change Precision). A hard color edge that must line up with a shape outline is safer as a separate object than as part of a gradient.
How many colors can a Coloreel design use?
Far more than a conventional design. With one dyed thread there are no needle limits: Coloreel's FAQ says the system can print over 12 million colors. In practice the limits are different ones:
- Room for each change: every color change needs a stretch of thread to land, so many colors packed into small objects blur together. Fewer, larger color areas look sharper.
- The color gamut: the thread is dyed with CMYK inks. Coloreel says this covers about 80% of the Pantone palette, so a few very saturated colors will be approximated. Flag any brand color that must be exact.
- Specialty threads: metallic and other specialty threads cannot be dyed by the unit. They sew from other needles using Coloreel's multi-thread option, so mark them separately in the artwork.

Can a photo be embroidered with Coloreel?
Yes, but not by converting the pixels. The digitizer builds fills whose stitch rows follow the forms in the photo, and the colors are assigned along those rows in Coloreel Studio. The noise effect, a randomized color variation along the thread, is one of the tools for textures such as fur, skin or foliage.
- Send the largest original you have, not a screenshot or a compressed social media copy.
- Crop to the subject. Background detail costs stitches and rarely reads in thread.
- Expect simplification: fine detail smaller than a few stitch widths is merged into the surrounding tone.
- Give the finished size. A portrait sewn at 3 in wide holds far less detail than the same photo at 10 in.
