What is a JEF file?

JEF is Janome's machine format. Janome describes it as the default format for its embroidery machines and says Elna machines use it as well. Inside, a JEF file is what Janome calls coordinates to move the hoop plus an instruction for every stitch: stitches, jumps and color changes, in the order the machine sews them.

That makes JEF a stitch file, not a working file. It shows the result of digitizing, not the objects, stitch types and settings that produced it. If you need to edit or resize a design properly, you want the digitizer's source file (for example a Wilcom EMB working file) and a fresh export, not an edited JEF. What does a JEF file store?

The open-source pyembroidery library, which reads and writes JEF, shows what the file carries:

Because the colors come from Janome's thread list, a JEF made from a design in another thread brand shows the nearest Janome shade. mySewnet software help, for example, lists .jef among the formats that hold color information and shows them as the nearest match in the selected thread range. Always check the color list before you thread up.

What is the difference between JEF, JEF+ and JPX?

Janome has added two newer formats beside JEF. Its own embroidery formats page describes them:

  • JEF: the standard stitch format read by Janome and Elna embroidery machines.
  • JEF+: an editable version created on the machine or in Janome's Horizon Link Suite software, where designs combined in one file can still be moved, rotated and resized later. Janome lists it for the 500E, MC9900, MC11000, HMC12000, HMC15000 and MB4, and says it recognizes the larger hoops of newer machines.
  • JPX: stitch data plus a background image, used by current Janome machines for special functions such as cutwork, AcuFil and on-screen fabric images. Janome says Digitizer MBX version 4 and later creates it.

For ordinary production, plain JEF is the file to send. If your machine is older, JEF is the one it is sure to read.

How do I open a JEF file?

  • Janome software: Janome's own programs, such as Digitizer MBX and Horizon Link Suite, work with Janome's formats.
  • Ink/Stitch (free): the Ink/Stitch file formats list shows JEF as a format it can both read and write.
  • Other brands' software: mySewnet (Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff) lists Janome .jef among the formats it opens and exports.
  • The machine itself: copy the JEF to a USB stick, then check it on the machine screen before sewing.

Why will my Janome machine not open a JEF file?

When a JEF will not load or shows up oddly, the cause is usually one of these:

  • The design is too big for the hoop or machine. A JEF records a hoop, and a design sized for a large hoop will not fit a machine with a smaller field. Check the design size against your largest hoop. Our guide to designs that sew the wrong size covers the settings that change finished size.
  • It is really a JEF+ or JPX. Janome lists those formats only for newer models. Ask for a plain JEF if your machine is older.
  • The file is not where the machine looks. Save it on the USB stick in the location your manual describes, and keep the file name short and simple.
  • The colors look wrong. That is not a fault in the file: the stored Janome thread numbers are shown as the nearest Janome shades. Match your own thread to the color sheet that came with the design.
Ordering a JEF

Tell the digitizer your Janome model and the hoop you will use, not just "Janome". The model decides the largest design the machine can sew, and the hoop decides how the design is positioned in the file.

How do I convert a JEF file to DST or PES?

Any program that reads JEF and writes your target format can convert it: open the file and save it as DST, PES, VP3 or whatever your machine needs. Keep these limits in mind:

  • Colors may not carry over. DST has no thread colors at all, so converting JEF to DST leaves only color stops. Write the color list down before converting.
  • Do not resize during conversion. Scaling a stitch file changes its density, because the stitch count stays the same while the area changes.
  • Check the hoop. The target machine must have a field large enough for the design, whatever the file extension says.
