Why caps are different

Why a polo file walks on a cap

Caps and beanies are staples of UK workwear packs and promotional merchandise, and neither behaves like a polo. A cap front curves in two directions, a seam runs up the middle, and the frame grips only part of a panel that wants to move.

Stitch a flat-garment file across that front and the design drifts. Each pass pushes fabric ahead of the needle, so the far side of the logo ends up out of register and the mark sits off-centre.

How big can a cap logo be?

Most six-panel caps on a standard frame give roughly 57mm of usable height and about 130mm of width, so we build to that unless you tell us otherwise.

Wide-angle and driver frames take a bigger design and low-profile caps take less, so the frame decides the final size. If you don't know which frame your machine has, send the model and we'll size conservatively and note it on the preview.

Polo file on a cap vs a proper cap file

Each fault on the left is what a flat-garment file does on a cap frame.

What goes wrong
Logo drifts off-centre. Left-to-right stitching drags the panel as it goes.
Text disappears into the seam. Lettering placed on the ridge loses its shape.
Gaps between colours. Outlines that meet on a polo separate on a curved front.
Stitches sink into mesh or knit. No underlay for open or stretchy fabric.
Design fouls the frame. Sized for a flat hoop, not a cap frame.

Cap digitising questions

A cap front is curved and held in a frame that grips only part of the panel, so it moves differently from a flat garment. Cap files are stitched from the centre seam outward so each side is anchored first. A polo file on a cap usually drifts off-centre.
On a standard cap frame, most six-panel caps give about 57mm of usable height and around 130mm of width. Wide-angle and driver frames allow more, and low-profile caps less. Tell us your frame and cap style and we size to them.
Yes. Beanie cuffs are knitted and stretch, so the file needs knit underlay and is usually shorter than a cap-front design. Tell us whether the beanie is cuffed and which hoop you use.
Yes. A cap needs centre-out sequencing, a lower design height and different density, so running the polo file on caps usually gives a crooked, gapped result. We build the cap version from the same artwork.
The file was most likely stitched left to right instead of centre-out, so the two halves pulled apart on the curve. Adjusting tension won't fix it; the design needs rebuilding as a cap file.
