Why the file matters

What sets a hand-digitised file apart

Manual digitising is where artwork becomes machine instructions: the position, direction, density and order of every stitch. Your machine follows the file to the letter, so each decision in it ends up on the garment, good or bad.

A weak file rarely looks weak on screen. It shows up mid-run as snapped threads, a rippled polo, or a crest whose outline sits a millimetre off its fill, usually on garments you have already bought in.

The usual culprits are auto-digitising software applying one setting to every fabric, and files bought cheaply from anonymous marketplace sellers with nobody to answer for them. Our comparison of buying from marketplace sellers sets out the trade-offs.

Every file is digitised by hand by our employed digitising team and planned for your design, your fabric and your machine. Auto-digitising plays no part at any stage.

Density and underlay for the fabric
A polycotton polo, a heavyweight sweatshirt and a school fleece each need their own density and underlay. We set both for the garment so logos neither pucker nor sink into the pile.

Pull compensation
Stitches draw fabric in along their length. We widen and extend shapes to allow for it, so round logos stay round and outlines meet their fills.

Running order and locking stitches
A planned running order cuts trims and colour changes on multi-head runs, and locking stitches at the start and end of each element stop them loosening in industrial washes.

Common problems

A cheap or auto-traced file vs a hand-digitised one

The faults a badly built file causes on the machine, and how we plan them out.

What goes wrong
Snapped threads mid-run. Overlapping stitches and heavy density keep stopping the heads.
Rippled polos. No density or underlay set for the fabric, so the garment puckers around the logo.
Gaps between outline and fill. Without pull compensation the shapes drift apart as they stitch.
Fixes that never land. An anonymous seller tweaks the file, the fault returns, and the delivery date slips.
Stitches loosening in the wash. No locking stitches, so elements work free through industrial laundering.

It depends what they charge. Local embroiderers commonly add a setup fee for each new logo and can take longer to produce the file around their own production.
